What is Astrocartography?
Astrocartography (also called locational astrology) is a powerful tool pioneered by renowned astrologer Jim Lewis. Astrocartography reveals how your birth chart (or natal chart)'s planetary energies interact with different locations around the world.
When you were born, the planets were positioned in specific locations relative to Earth. Your astrological birth chart reveals these planetary placements and places each planet into one of twelve spaces within an astrology chart.
Astrocartography takes this a step further by placing your birth chart data on a map of the world. The astrocartography map is adorned with colorful lines crisscrossing the planet, showing where each planet's energy, relative to a city worldwide, is strongest for you.
These planetary lines reveal how different geographic locations will influence various areas of your life, in areas including love, career, creativity, spirituality, and personal growth. Some planetary lines can either be highly supportive or challenging, revealing why some places can either feel so perfect (or so difficult) for you. This is all the planetary influence at work!
How to Generate Your Astrocartography Chart
Creating your astrocartography chart is quick, easy, and free! Here’s a simple step-by-step guide:
Head to astro.com, click on Horoscopes, and select AstroClick Travel from the menu
Enter your birth data when prompted, remembering to specify the exact birth time
In seconds, your astrocartography map will be generated
You can play around with the toggles and settings, such as inspecting each continent or zooming in and out in the Whole World view. It may look overwhelming at first glance, but after some time dissecting each line, it’ll become second nature.

Which Astrocartography Line is for Love?
When it comes to matters of the heart, certain astrocartography lines for love are particularly powerful.
Descendant Lines
When you look at an astrocartography chart for love, you'll see lines running vertically and horizontally across the map. Reflected in both the birth chart and astrocartography map are four key angles: the AC, IC, DC, and MC.
Each of these four angles represents key areas of life
Ascendant (AC): Associated with the First House, the AC represents how you appear to others and express yourself
Imum Coeli (IC): Associated with the Fourth House, the IC represents home and emotional foundation
Descendant (DC): Associated with the Seventh House, the DC represents partnership and relationships (note: this is most important for love!).
Midheaven (MC): Associated with the Tenth House, the MC represents your goals, aspirations, career, public life, and reputation
When reading an astrocartography chart, you’ll notice that each planet has one of these four lines (or angles), meaning that you’ll have, for example, a Sun AC, a Sun IC, a Sun DC, and a Sun MC line, where each of these lines will arise in different areas of the globe.
For love specifically, the Descendant (DC) lines are most significant because the Descendant represents "the other" in astrology. This would be your partnerships, relationships, and how you connect one-on-one.
In some cases, when multiple beneficial love lines cross or run close together, that location becomes even more powerful. For example, having your Venus DC and Moon DC lines intersect creates a sweet spot for both romantic attraction and emotional connection.

Other Areas to Look for Love in Your Astrocartography Chart
While your Venus and Moon lines are the most commonly known astrocartography lines for love, there's another powerful layer to explore: the ruling planets of your 5th and 7th houses.
In astrology, there are two houses linked to romantic relationships (note: you’ll find these houses clearly marked on your astrology chart, not your astrocartography chart):
The 5th House represents pleasure, love, creativity, amusement, children, and ‘things you create’ in general. In the context of dating and romance, the 5th house can reveal our desire for love, how we express ourselves romantically, our attitudes toward dating, and even insights into our approaches to children.
The 7th House represents partnerships, both romantic and non-romantic. It reveals how to relate to others, what we look for and value in a relationship, and, in romantic love relationships, our approach to marriage and long-term, serious relationships.
When using astrocartography for love, examining both of these houses gives you an interesting picture: where to find exciting romance (5th house) and where to find lasting partnership (7th house).
Finding Your House Rulers
Each house in your birth chart is "ruled" by a specific planet. When we identify the specific planet (or house ruler), we can reference the astrocartography chart to see where it is active in relation to a destination. We’d want to find the house ruler or the zodiac sign that sits on the cusp (beginning) of the 5th and 7th Houses.
First, open your astrology chart, locate the 5th and 7th houses, and you’ll see a zodiac sign on the edge of each house.
Next, from the zodiac sign, identify the ruling planet:
Aries: Mars
Taurus: Venus
Gemini: Mercury
Cancer: Moon
Leo: Sun
Virgo: Mercury
Libra: Venus
Scorpio: Mars
Sagittarius: Jupiter
Capricorn: Saturn
Aquarius: Saturn and Uranus
Pisces: Neptune
Then, apply this to your astrocartography chart. Search for the planetary line that corresponds to the house ruler of your 5th and 7th houses, and see where they land in the world. Pay particular attention to the DC lines!
For example, if your 7th house has Scorpio on the cusp, and Scorpio is ruled by Mars, Mars becomes your 7th house ruling planet, meaning you should search for Mars line/s to reveal insights into where you're most likely to attract serious, committed relationships. Similarly, if your 5th house has Sagittarius on the cusp, and Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, Jupiter becomes your 5th house ruling planet, and your Jupiter line/s would indicate where you'll experience joyful, expansive romantic experiences and exciting dates.
